Archaeology can be used to enlighten the first classification of the ancient periods. The discoveries made on this subject in Rwanda and in the countries bordering the Great Lakes completely changed the old conceptions on how the countries were populated and the evolution of cultures in the region.  (Read more)

METALWORK

The beginning of metalwork is situated towards the 9th -7th century BC in Rwanda and the rest of the interlocked region. Pewter and copper were introduced towards the 17th century AD (evidenced in the tomb of cyirima Rujugiro, dating back to 17th century, in which finery made of copper and pewter were found). PERCEPTION OF LIFE AND DEATH

The Rwandan conception of the universe, life and death is expressed in recounting stories and in common narratives. Rwandans believe that the Universe is three worlds superimposed on each other:

• Right at the top of the canopy of heaven is the supreme being and beings dotted with extraordinary forces; a perfect world where death is unknown. The supreme being, the creator of the universe is almighty, benevolent and transcendent; he rarely intervenes in man's daily life. (Read more)

FAMILY

Marriage is the basis of every society; it serves as an intermediary between an individual and the whole society it was and is a union socially recognized by society between two individuals, a union between two groups of parents. It extended relationship links beyond bloodties, regulated sexual relationships, creating a suitable unit for producing and educating children, for harmonizing the relationship among family members and the sharing out of properties.
