A Look Around Our Museum

When planning to come to the museum, if possible you should plan to stay with us the whole day. We have many things for you to see while you are here visiting us.

Our grounds are basically divided into two main areas.

The Upper Level contains:

  1. The Artifacts Exhibitions, located in the main building
  2. The Indigenous Crafts Schools, where local youth are taught many of the indigenous handcrafts once commonly used in Rwanda like pottery, metallurgy, weaving and bead work.
  3. The urugo recreation, where you can see a typical homestead of the past and may even see artisans performing basic tasks once needing in everyday living
  4. The Gardens, where indigenous plants are identified and you can explore some of the vast variations of vegetation found in Rwanda
  5. The upper area is also where visitors can schedule to see live dances preformed by our museum dancers. The dances allow visitors to experience the pageantry of the dance as well as experience the dynamic sound of the famous African Drums.

The Lower Level contains:

  1. The nature trail, winding down into the valley, located behind the artifact building, you are able to experience the beauty of Rwanda as you look out over the valley.
  2. The brick factory, located on the edge of the valley floor is a business where hand made items of clay are made and then fired, for use in the construction industry. Items made here are differently designed brick and clay roofing tiles.
  3. Fish ponds, located on the valley floor are a number of ponds used for commercially raising fish and a small recreational building built over one of the pounds that can be rented for a quiet day with the family fishing and enjoying your catch while picnicking and watching the fish swim around below you in the pond.
  4. Rabbit project, on the edge of the fish ponds there is also a project for raising rabbits. Her experiments are being conducted with different varieties of rabbits from around the world.
  5. Fields, surrounding the fish ponds are fields used for the commercial raising of vegetables for sale in the local markets.
